It’s a grey, cloudy morning as the sun rises above East Maui, lighting the water at Kanaha Beach. I stopped to snap this quick picture from the wall outside Kahului Harbor at about 7:30am. There seemed to be a clean, elegant, modern style about this scene, and I was struck by the peacefulness and natural glow. And of course I wanted to paint it.
But once I put paint to canvas, I couldn’t commit to the serene colors. I started with the peach tones and greys, but slowly added in some purple, and then brighter blues and yellows.
I think it still captures a pure, colorful sunrise, but not with the same mood or grace as Mother Nature created.
