Where the Locals Hang Out
If you’re looking for where the locals hang out on Saturday mornings, you’ll find many of us at the Maui Swap Meet.
Founded in 1981, the Swap Meet has had three different locations in my lifetime. As a child I visited it at the Fair Grounds, on Pu’unene Avenue in Kahului. Now referred to as the “old” Fair Grounds, once upon a time they were literally that – where the annual Maui County Fair and JayCee’s carnival were held. In addition there was a playhouse on the property, and in years past, before my time, a horse race track. The last fair was held there in 1987. When the Fair Grounds closed, the Swap Meet moved across the road to an open lot next to the Kahului Post Office. They were there many years until the space became available at the UH Maui College property, where it continues today, every Saturday from 7am -1pm.
Admission is an easy 50 cents; it lets you in to see Maui’s best homemade crafts, art, fresh produce, clothes and much more. With over 200 vendors, if you’re like me, you can spend a few hours just browsing.
A Booth of My Own
I had the opportunity to bring my art to the Swap Meet for a few Saturdays this summer. I really enjoyed the camaraderie with my fellow vendors and meeting people from around the world. I had a lot of nice feedback about my art, and sent a few pieces off to their new homes!
Mornings start early for vendors, but the views make it worthwhile!

I was so very pleased to sell a piece to fellow Maui artist Phil Soo. An avid windsurfer, he loved this piece featuring a view of the north shore.
A Few of My Favorite Things at the Maui Swap Meet
When I’m not “working” what are my favorite things to do at the Swap Meet? My first stop is always at Aunty Lia’s Baked Goods for her amazing Banana Bread! Then on to pick up some fresh fruits and veggies. I like to browse the art and jewelry, there are some very creative people on this island and I always find great gifts. Along the way I usually run into several people I know and we have our Saturday morning visit. On my way out I always stop at the Maui Macaroon booth. YUM!
