Ho’okipa Morning

Here I’m sharing the making of one of my favorite scenes, from the lookout at Ho’okipa.  This view has a simple structure of mountains in the distance and an abundance of sky and ocean, which make it fun to play with colors and textures in the sea and clouds.

I start by painting the canvas background colors, which I choose as the contrast colors to the main colors in my painting.  In this case I just used orange throughout, as there is going to be a lot of blue in this piece!

Background Color

I like to start with the sky and work my way down the painting.

Next I add the ocean. I love playing with my pallet knife and creating the thick, colorful waves.

Add Ocean

I paint around the sides for a finished look. Except for the top of the piece – retaining the background color here is my “signature” look.

Next I fill in the mountains in the background and the rock outcropping.I felt this needed a cloud for balance. And I added a tiny bit of yellow to the water and in the cloud.

And it’s done!

As always, this piece is available in my Mamala O Maui Etsy shop.
