Haleakala Ku Hanohano

Haleakala Ku Hanohano (“Haleakala Stands Glorious,”) the song from the Maui band Hapa, always comes to mind when I look up at Haleakala, as it does indeed “stand glorious.”

HALEAKALA KU HANOHANO

Akea no ka mauna ke ‘alawa a‘e
Haleakala ku hanohano

‘Ohu ‘ohu na ‘opua me he lei la
‘Ohu kau kuahiwi hali‘i nahelehele

Moani ke ‘ala lei lokelani o Maui
No‘u pulama, waonahele pu i ka le‘a

‘Ike au i ka‘oi o ka nani e po‘ai nei
E ho‘omalu ai ka la‘i o loko

Ha‘ina ‘ia mai ana ka puana
Haleakala ku hanohano

HALEAKALA STANDS GLORIOUS

Broad is the mountain to gaze upon
Haleakala stands glorious

Shrouded in billowy clouds as if garlanded
Creeping mist that adorns the uplands

A cool gentle breeze brings the fragrance of Maui’s flower
Mine to cherish, the lush mountain sharing my delight

I behold the best in beauty that surrounds me
and am sheltered by the peace within

The story is told
Haleakala stands glorious

The story is retold
